Grande Cache Coal's corporate logo features a miners' lamp in recognition of the mining heritage in the Grande Cache community. This logo also serves as a reminder of GCC's commitment to the health and safety of all employees and the community in which we operate. It is GCC's policy to perform work in a safe manner consistent with good operating practices and to develop an awareness and understanding among all employees of the responsibility and accountability for a safe workplace.
To accomplish this, GCC has implemented several safety awareness initiatives. Training is a key element. All newly hired employees are required to go through safety orientation. New hires are placed in a classroom orientation program which focuses on Health & Safety, accident prevention and emergency response. A mentor/trainee program is also used to assist new employees in their transition period, emphasizing safety and a sharing of experiences and professional skills.
Communication also plays a vital role in building safety awareness. Keeping employees informed of new initiatives and encouraging suggestions on how to improve operations to increase safety and reduce the number of injuries is an ongoing practice which is encouraged.
Monitoring equipment is used throughout operations to ensure that employees are working in a safe environment. Trained underground mine rescue teams are in place at all times to respond to emergencies which may arise.
A Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, made up of management and employees, ensures employee input in the development of site specific health and safety policies and procedures.
